Paralympic Swimming Training in USM 2011
Since year 2007, I was involved in the volunteering swimming teaching for Penang Down Syndrome Association (PDSA). It is a collaboration between USM lifeguard corps and PDSA.
Every sunday morning 9-10am, have fun with the kids in the swimming pool, try to let them expose to the water and boost up water confidence.
There goes the bond between me and community service in term of volunteering swimming instructor.
My first student - Choon Kent, a down syndrome boy, is a very very cute boy.
I spent almost a year to teach him swim. Till today, I still cannot forget the moment he swim breast stroke in the pool and the mother was like jumping very happily, we were like cheering in the pool.
The smile just can't stop.
It was my second year of degree in biological sciences, majoring Microbiology.
After I finished my degree, I had continue my master degree in USM in molecular biology. However, I didnt went to the pool that much as I spend more time in the lab already. The other reason is that the coach from Seberang berai is coming over to teach the kids, and also my junior of lifeguard corps is continuing the good works.
After that, I was just visit the boys and girls on and off on Sunday...
Till last month, the parents calling me up again and ask for help.
Due to my 'reputation' of being a good, patient, passionate swimming instructor for PDSA session, they recommend me to the paralympic swimming training program.
The person in-charge/ coach is Cikgu Roziah, she is looking for volunteers to teach the beginners in paralympic swimming.
She told me that Penang needs more paralympic swimmers!
we will be having a competition for state under collaboration of jabatan belia dan sukan and PESRON.
Here goes the facebook page of USM paralympic training for easier coordination of volunteers and promotion regarding this program.

The Basic of Swimming - Free style (Front Crawl)
Free style is also known as front crawl as the mainly using arms to crawl in the water.
An amount of 70% power output is from arm pulling while kicking is not that important in moving forward.
The purpose of kicking would be making sure of a stream-line body position in order to reduce water resistance.
Free style can be challenging in the breathing while the pulling and kicking seems easy.
An important part in free style is Body Roll - Shoulder level should keep rotating when swim.
Thus, turn head sideways in timing with the shoulder turning up. Breath in, turn back in the water to form stream line body and bubbling, then continue to breath in again.

Swimming pool in Penang Island - USM area
Good day everyone~
I'm going to introduce the swimming pool available at USM area.
USM swimming pool
Firstly, of course, the Olympic size USM swimming pool!
Located at minden height which near to the USM batu uban entrance.
It has very beautiful scene and crystal clear water.
The lifeguarding there is very strict during semester, when the pool is guarded by professional lifeguards (USM students under USM lifeguard corps).
Swimming cap and lycra material swim wear is a must, No underwater swim and no undergarment is allowed.
This is one of the view of USM swimming pool, if you are not USM staff or students,
then you have to apply for membership in order to use the sports facilities in USM.
Swimming pool @ Desa Permai Indah
This is a apartment swimming pool at Jalan Helang.
A beautiful blue floor swimming pool and is separated into 2 shallow and deep area by a floating buoy line.
Suitable for both beginner kids and adults.
It is free if you are the residents of desa permai indah. If not, you have to be smart to avoid caught by the security guards of the apartment. (>_<)
There are some facilities for the kids, the depth of the pool is just nice for them as well!
